Madhumeh is fast growing health problem mostly in active phase of life. Insulin regulates the entry of glucose in most of the cells of the body, besides regulating many other metabolic processes.

Long-term Madhumeh can damage many organs of the body, causing blindness, kidney failure, gangrene in limbs, impotency, nerve damage and many other serious problems like repeated infections, neuropathy etc. in Madhumeh, risk of heart diseases (angina, heart attack), high blood pressure, stroke (paralysis) etc increases manyfolds but by controlling the blood glucose level we can prevent the serious consequences of this lifestyle disorder. As per the nutritional values, a diabetic person needs all the essential nutrients as any other healthy person. They should consume well-balanced meals which will improve their impaired metabolism. The diet of a diabetic person should depend upon their taste, habits, customs, belief, culture, economic status and physical activities. Let’s summarize the essential and beneficial key points that a diabetic person should take care of, especially when he is forming his diet chart.

Are you under-weight?

If weight is normal or patient is under weight, usually there is no restriction of calories. They can eat 30 calories per kg. of weight, out of which 10-15 per cent calories must be provided by proteins, 20-25 per cent by fats and rest 60-65 per cent by carbohydrates with adequate amount of minerals, vitamins and water.

Consumption of Fats

For Madhumeh, no food is absolutely banned, but they have to count the calories in them. Fats are rich source of energy and they can increase the pace of atherosclerosis. So fats should be consumed in less quantity. Fats should provide only 20 to 25 percent of total calories required.

About Carbohydrates

Simple carbohydrates like glucose, table sugars, fructose, maltose, grapes, honey and many others can cause rapid rise in blood glucose level. So it should be avoided as it can prove harmful to the body. Avoid chocolates, ice-cream, honey, sweets, and sugar. If you have a sweet tooth, then you may eat them occasionally and that too in small quantity.

Whereas, complex carbohydrates such as starch and dextrin, can cause the slow rise in blood glucose levels. It should be taken in adequate quantity.

What about Protein diet?

In Madhumeh, the requirement of mineral, vitamins and other micro-nutrients remain the same as adults. Diabetic’s diet must contain 10 to 15 percent of calories derived from protein. If patient’s kidneys are damaged, they should restrict the protein intake.

Note: It is advised to consume minimum amount of Cholesterol (less than 300mg/day)


  1. People with Madhumeh should consume more PUFA and Mono unsaturated fats found in vegetables oil and fishes and consume less amount of saturated fats present in meat, mutton, ghee, vegetable ghee, butter, cream, egg yolk, full cream milk. Adding small quantity of Omega-3 fatty acids in their diet is good. You can find it in soya beans, walnuts and cold-water fishes.
  2. If you are diabetic, you must eat containing plenty of fibers at least 30 grams daily. Eat wholegrain cereals, brown bread, fruits and vegetables for adequate amount of fibers in your diet.
  3. It is advised to consume small and frequent meals at fixed time. It’s better to have three major meals- breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks i.e. evening tea and bedtime snacks. Having two large meals can be harmful. Always full your stomach in small quantities within frequent intervals.
  4. Maintaining the timings of the meals is necessary. A diabetic person shouldn’t miss the meal and should never go fasting. Having food regularly during the day is important.
  5. It is a myth that a diabetic person should eat simple food. He can eat the same food as cooked for the other family members. Important is to fix the adequate quantity of food to be eaten and nutrients to intake. There is no need to cook food separately for them.
  6. Drinking plenty of water is important. Consume at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.
  7. Avoid cigarette, tobacco, alcohol and related drugs. Health is wealth.
  8. Occasionally, Diabetic person is suspected to have other diseases like high blood pressure, angina, and kidney dysfunction. Due consideration must be given to these diseases while planning the meals.
  9. The calorie required by the diabetic body depends upon their weight, activities he perform, presence of stress, illness, and most importantly the type of Madhumeh. Usually, obese diabetics need about 1500 calories food and young diabetics who are lean requires about 2000 calories meals daily.
  10. Lifestyle plays a vital role in developing the amount of calories and diet. Making use of sugar substitutes and sweeteners like sugar-free, saccharin etc.
  11. All patients must know alternative food which they can eat. This enables the patient to eat as per their choice, whether at home or eat outside and in the parties.
